Version: Book 5

Dungeon Floor 5 — The Bubbles

Overview

Floor 5 is called "The Bubbles" — a collection of 1,172 self-contained sphere and dome environments, each called a bubble. Unlike the linear corridors of previous floors, Floor 5 assigns each crawler group to a single bubble and tasks them with taking all four quadrant castles to advance. Time to Level Collapse at the start of Book 4: 15 days. Remaining crawlers at entry: 178,887.

First Appearance

Book 4, Chapter 1

Structure

Each bubble contains four quadrants:

QuadrantEnvironmentCastle Type
AirDesert sky-dome with floating islands and sandstormsGnomish floating fortress (The Wasteland)
LandDesert terrain with sand castleSandcastle of the Mad Dune Mage
WaterOcean quadrant with oil refinery aboveOrc-operated oil refinery; throne room on bridge of submarine Akula
SubterraneanUnderground maze beneath the entire bubble (Necropolis of Anser)Pterodactyl guardian (Quetzalcoatlus)

All four quadrant castles must be taken — each containing a stairwell in its throne room — to advance to Floor 6.

Bubble 543

Carl's assigned bubble. The Air Quadrant environment is called "The Wasteland": a desert zone beneath a dome sky lit by dual suns named Taranis and Hellik. The day/night cycle runs 24 hours, with sandstorms occurring every 24 hours. A Red Equinox event was scheduled for Day 11.

Air Quadrant: Hump Town

A settlement built against the bowl wall of the Air Quadrant, protected from sandstorms by magical fabric sails. Populated primarily by Dromedarian NPCs (camel-race). Hump Street and Weird Shit Alley form the economic center of the town. The Dirigible Gnome Faction maintained a stalemate with the Dromedarians via mutual deterrence — gnomes threatened to bomb the town; Dromedarians held gnome flesh mechanic Wynne hostage.

Air Quadrant: The Wasteland (Gnomish Fortress)

A massive floating fortress operated by the Dirigible Gnome Faction. Equipped with aircraft, bombers, sniper teams, and Knock-Knock bombs. Destroyed by Carl's team in Chapter 12. See Air Castle Assault.

Necropolis of Anser

A massive underground maze beneath the entire bubble, accessible via the Subterranean Quadrant. The Necropolis fills with water after the Water Quadrant castle is taken. The Gate of the Feral Gods artifact was hidden within the Necropolis.

Land Quadrant: Sandcastle of Ghazi

The land quadrant castle was made entirely of sand. Ghazi the Mad Dune Mage had transformed himself into a sand elemental. His wife, Mrs. Ghazi, served as the castle's borough boss guardian. See Sand Castle: Ghazi Encounter.

Water Quadrant

An oil refinery operated by orcs, capable of shooting fireballs. The throne room was located on the bridge of the submarine Akula. Water Quadrant boss: Lusca (Octo-Shark Brood Mother Queen, Level 82 City Boss), defeated by Carl's team in Chapters 26–27.

Subterranean Quadrant: Pandinus

The town within the subterranean quadrant. Home to Pazuzu (scorpion-like NPCs) who are aggressive at night. Feral versions appear near the necropolis exterior. The ghost of Quetzalcoatlus (an ancient pterodactyl queen) served as the quadrant's guardian; she was electrified and destroyed during the floor's events.

Active Factions (Bubble 543)

  • Dirigible Gnomes — Air Quadrant military power; destroyed Ch 12
  • Dromedarians — Hump Town operators; partially infiltrated by Changelings
  • Changelings — Shapeshifter NPCs embedded in Dromedarian leadership; key allies to Carl

Notable Events

End-of-Floor Notes

At the end of Floor 5, Carl opened the Gate of the Feral Gods to Larracos (the ninth floor faction market), flooding it with water, sharks, and depth charges. Seven of nine factions filed lawsuits to stop the plan; all failed. Changeling children escaped through the gate to Floor 6 with Carl's assistance.
