The Transformation
Overview
The Transformation is the global catastrophic event that destroyed Earth's surface and created the World Dungeon. It marks the beginning of Dungeon Crawler Carl.
Date and Time
January 3rd, approximately 2:23 AM Pacific Standard Time
What Happened
The Borant Corporation, operating under Syndicate law (Precious Elemental Reserves Code, subsection 543), activated a mining process that crushed every enclosed structure on Earth's surface — every building, car, airplane, subway, and tent — simultaneously and instantly. Anyone inside any structure died in that moment.
The crushed matter was reconfigured into an 18-level underground dungeon. A robotic announcement was broadcast into the minds of all survivors, explaining the legal situation and offering entry into the World Dungeon as a path to "reclaiming" the lost matter. Entry was voluntary — survivors could choose not to enter, though they would be left on a destroyed surface with no shelter or civilization.
Survivors
Those who were outdoors (under open sky, with no roof) at the moment of the Transformation survived. The vast majority of humanity was killed — the global indoor population at any given moment ensured enormous casualties regardless of local time or conditions.
Approximately 150,000 dungeon entrances appeared worldwide, each marked by a spotlight. Entry was open for exactly one hour. Approximately 13 million people entered.
(Note: The 2:23 AM timing and cold conditions described at the start of the book reflect Carl's location in the Pacific Northwest — not the worldwide situation. Survivors in other time zones and climates faced different circumstances.)
Key Participants
- Borant Corporation — initiated the Transformation under Syndicate law
- The Syndicate — governing body whose laws permitted this action
- Carl and Princess Donut — among the survivors who entered the dungeon
Outcome
The surface of Earth was destroyed. All human civilization was eliminated. Roughly 13 million crawlers entered the World Dungeon to begin the season.
